Come celebrate "Carnival!"

Carnival is a pre-Lenten festival celebrated in many countries around the world. In the Dominican Republic, Carnival has a rich tradition dating hundreds of years. The native island people, the Tainos, held celebrations called areitos. These festivals celebrated planting and harvest times as well as other special occasions such as weddings. They would use body decorations including paint, tattoos and masks during these festivals.

When Spanish conquerors and their African slaves arrived on this Caribbean island, they added customs and traditions from their own cultures. The African people are credited with the vivid colors, musical instruments and dancing associated with Carnival in the Dominican Republic. A touch of humor was also added by the African slaves as a way to escape the difficulties they endured. The Spanish conquerors added a religious aspect to the "pagan" Carnival.

The people in the Dominican Republic really know how to celebrate Carnival! Following the religious tradition of Carnival as a pre-Lenten festival, the people of the Dominican Republic expanded the celebration to include their Independence Day which is February 27. Much of the month of February and sometimes into March, there are parades, events and competitions with people wearing elaborate costumes as they celebrate Carnival!
